On Saturday, July 26, 2025, we’re hosting a Street Co-Naming Ceremony and Children’s Day Block Party in Bushwick to honor the extraordinary legacy of Mildred Phillips, a beloved community leader, caregiver, and advocate for children and families in Brooklyn.

For over 40 years, Mildred and her sister Lula Mae Phillips opened their home at 324 Eldert Street to more than 16 foster children and countless others in need. During the height of the heroin epidemic in the '90s, they were a pillar of stability, nourishment, and safety for many children in the neighborhood. The event will raise funds, some of which will go toward scholarships for local youth, as featured in a recent article by BK Reader.
