On Saturday, August 2, 2025, we hosted a Street Co-Naming Ceremony and Children’s Day Street Event in Bushwick to honor the extraordinary legacy of Mildred Phillips, a beloved community leader, caregiver, and advocate for children and families in Brooklyn sponsored by  Sandy Nurse City Council Member of District 37 and Brooklyn Community Board 4.

For over 40 years, Mildred and her sister, Lula Mae Phillips, opened their home and hearts to more than 16 foster children and many more in need. At the height of the heroin epidemic in the '90s before Bushwick was Vogue’s 7th coolest neighborhood in the world, they were a source of stability, nourishment, and safety for countless kids in the neighborhood. They also fed 400 to 700 homeless people three times a week for which they were nicknamed “Midnight Riders.” Some proceeds from this event will go toward scholarships for local youth, as featured in a recent recent article by BK Reader.
